Natural Sponges: For a Natural Skincare Experience
Unlike plastic sponges, real natural sponges sourced from the ocean provide several skin benefits. Natural sponges are obtained from elastic and absorptive skeletons of various sea dwellers such as the Spongia officinalis. The bath sponge is very similar to corals. During the '40s and '50s, the sponge beds were plagued by disease but have since recovered. Sponges are sustainably cultivated in a depth of approximately 40 metres and unlike plastic sponges, they don't pose a threat to the environment. Bath sponges are of natural origin and thus naturally biodegradable.
There are different kinds of natural sponges and the best are said to be sourced from the Mediterranean Ocean. As such, these sponges are relatively more expensive in comparison to others. Good quality sponges are also sourced from the South Sea and the Caribean. Low-quality sponges are more rough in texture.
Natural sponges have a firmer texture than the sponges made from crude oil products and possess skin-loving benefits. They provide an exfoliating effect that removes dead skin cells or callused skin particles in a gentle way, refining the complexion with regular use for a softer and more delicate appearance. Blood flow is stimulated and the skin becomes firmer. Natural sponges are gentle enough to use for face and body cleansing. However, it is advised not to use natural sponges on skin that is prone to redness or inflamed.
Natural sponges are a purely natural product and may become grey and rough with time. This can be rectified by placing the sponge in a salt solution (125 g of salt: 1 litre of water) for 24 hours. These sponges feel comfortable in salt water due to the fact that they are sourced from the ocean. Rinse the sponge thoroughly after 24 hours and place in a vinegar solution (4 tbsp. vinegar: 1 litre of water) to restore its natural colour. Note: do not place the sponge in a vinegar solution often as this may cause breakage and always rinse the sponge thoroughly after use. This is the only way to get rid of any deposits and residues found inside its pores. Allow the sponge to dry completely to prevent bacterial formation and bacterial growth. Do not place the sponge in the microwave to dry as it could catch fire. It is better to wash the sponge in the washing machine at 30°C instead.
